We’re all talented in some way. Well, let’s face it; most of us are talented in several ways. The question is, do we realize what we’re good at? Or do we simply choose to do the things we’re good at and subconsciously avoid the things we may not excel at? If someone were to ask you to name 3 things you’re skilled at doing, do you know how you’d answer it?
I’m learning a lot about my skill sets as my business develops and grows. As a sole proprietor, I’m the sales rep, the accounting department, the marketing department, the administrative assistant, the tech guy and the receptionist. Am I good at all of these roles? No way. Does it pain me to say that? It does. As a small business owner, it’s expected for the owner to wear many hats and take on all the roles for the first couple of years. I get that. I expected that. There does come a time, though, where one has to stand back and think: Where and how is my time best spent?
I’m reading a fascinating book right now by the infamous Michael Gerber. He wrote the E-Myth, which changed my entire perspective of business ownership. He believes that all good companies are run on systems. It’s also about being able to delegate and not take on every single task that needs to be done. It’s about recognizing your skills and utilizing them while also recognizing your weaknesses and delegating those. So, as much as it pains me to say this, I am not an expert in marketing. There, I said it. I am good at many things but creating marketing material is not my forte.
This epiphany occurred to me last week during a call with my business coach. After several incredibly insightful questions, it all of a sudden occurred to me. I am spending WAY too much time creating marketing materials without an in depth knowledge of what I’m doing. Sure, I can make it look good but there is so much psychology involved in marketing. People get Master’s degrees in Marketing, who was I kidding? So, enter the million dollar question. How much is my time worth? Could it be better spent on things I know I’m good at? Is it time to delegate this to an expert?
The answer is this: it’s time to bring in the big guns. Go hard or go home. So that’s just what I did. I’m on the verge of partnering with an incredibly important client and he asked for a mock up of what I had in mind. This is where Bang Media Works comes into the equation. Ironically, a good friend and former colleague launched this marketing company recently and we’re working together to bring Epic Empire Designs to the next level.
So, to make a long story short, it is quite humbling to realize you’re not very good at something. It is, however, incredibly exciting to realize the potential that awaits now that an expert is on the case. So, now that I’m no longer working in the marketing department, I can focus on the others that have been neglected. Oh yes, hang on to your hats, this is going to be a crazy ride!

That is so true, Heather. You can’t do everything, especially as your business gets bigger. Good on you for recognizing that and delegating appropriately. Onward and upward, girl!
Thanks, Julie! It was a bit of an epiphany & well worth it. Thanks for reading!
